The novelty schedule included daily masses within the Basilica of San Pedro, each chaired by a different cardinal and dedicated to the deceased Pope. Sunday’s Mass was headed by Cardinal Dominique Mamberti, a senior deacon at the Cardinals College that serves as advisors of the Pope and directs the process of choosing a replacement when the position is vacant.

As most of the processions were maintained through the Duel Phase, hundreds of cardinals attended the final event along with Lypeople multitudes that packed in the cathedral. The Vatican shared a live broadcast of the Mass on Sunday as he has done every day of novels.

Mamberti directed the dough in Italian, when a choir sang hymns and several others approached the altar to sing or comment.

“We have all admired how Pope Francis, encouraged by the love of the Lord and taken by his grace, was faithful to his mission to the extreme consumption of his strength,” Mamberti said, partly of the homily translated by by a by a by a by a by a by a by a by a by a. “He warned the powerful, who had to obey God instead of man, and proclaimed to all humanity the joy of the gospel.”

Remembered for challenging long data rules within the church, Francis He died of a stroke On Easter Monday that led to a coma and heart failure, said the Vatican in a statement at that time. He had experienced great health problems in recent years, including two abdominal surgeries and multiple respiratory infections. The Pope was hospitalized for five weeks between February and March after developing bronchitis and later pneumonia.

It begins on May 7, when a group of approximately 135 cardinal voters will be isolated in the Vatican and will begin an old ritual used to determine who becomes the next Pope. Within the Sistine Chapel, those cardinals will repeatedly issue ballots for the candidate or candidates of their election, until a single candidate receives a two more third majority.

Timothy Dolan Cardinal, New York Archbishop, discussed the next conclave with journalists on Sunday, but still did not hint at any favorite to emerge.

“In the general congregations, you do not talk about candidates. You talk about beauty, the graces of Pope Francis and the challenges of the Church,” said Dolan, adding that some conversations between the cardinals occur privately.

As for the qualities he is looking for in the next leader of the Church, Dolan said he hopes that “there is a Pope who is like Jesus, because the Pope is supposed to be the vicar of Christ on earth.”

“The first time Pope Francis spoke to the cardinals, Hey spoke so beautifully and humbly and simply, and was sitting next to the Vienna Archbishop Christoph Schonborn, and he had tears in his eyes,” Dollan recalled. “Hey, he said:” Speak as Jesus. “I said:” I think that is the description of the work. “
