Tom Cruise was so close to being a “SNL” wing for Val Kilmer.
The 62 -year -old actor was an assumption to appear in “Saturday Night Live” with his former co -star of “Top Gun” in a sketch written by Michael Schur and Robert Carlock in the first Ages.
Kilmer, who died at age 65 on April 1, organized the sketch comedy show in 2000. Now, Seth Meyers is looking back in the iconic episode duration of his “The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast.”
The 51 -year -old comedian read a 49 -year -old Schur voice note, detailed the premise of the scene that Cruise could have included.
“They spent 25 years after the events of ‘Top Gun’ and Iceman had retired from the Navy and now flew very boring commercial flights to Delta,” Schur explained.
The sketch had Chris Parnell, Ana Gasteyer and Will Ferrell, and saw Kilmer fighting for the control of the intercom against Parnell, 58.
Kilmer shouted confusing orders and non -meaning movies such as: “Listen to me, you are out of place! Your ego is writing checks your body cannot charge and that makes you dangerous!”
It turns out that Cruise was in the 8H studio and almost walked on stage to join chaos.
Schur said the star of the “impossible mission” was “stopped eight feet away watching this sketch and simply enjoying it a lot. [Producer] Marci Klein came to me while the sketch was broadcast and was like, Tom Cruise is here, should we make him like to walk? I thought, “yes, of course, we should leave.” And she said: “What should he do?”
The suggested cruise could “grab Val Kilmer and simply say:” Hi Iceman, let’s get you out of here, friend. “
Schur reminded Klein, 58, going to the star to complete him in the plan and “saw Tom Cruise nodding … as,” yes, yes, okay, I understand. “I thought,” My God, this will be incredible. “
When Cruise was heading to the stage, “the sketch ended and the applause was indicated and Val was taken to change.”
“We missed it like eight seconds,” he recalled. “We lost a Tom cruise in the sketch, which would have gone, 30 rock would have collapsed to the ground.”
But the couple finally won their “Top Gun” meeting in 2022, when they starred in the sequel “Top Gun: Maverick”.
Cruise confessed that he was excited before the two gathered for the second film.
“I just want to say that it was quite emotional. I know Val for decades,” explained the star of “Jerry Maguire” in “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” In 2023. “For him to come to play that character … he is such a powerful actor that he instantly became that character again. You are looking at Iceman.”
Cruise recalled: “I was crying, I was crying. I was excited. He is such a brilliant actor, I love his work.”
Kilmer died in Los Angeles from pneumonia, years after a battle against throat cancer. After his death, Cruise paid tribute to the student “Willow” while he was in Cinemacon to promote his next movie “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.”
“I would like to honor a dear friend of mine, Val Kilmer, for a moment,” Cruise said at that time, ABC News. “I can’t tell you how much I admire his work, how grateful and honest was when he joined” Top Gun “and later returned to” Top Gun: Maverick. “
“I think it would be really good if we could have a moment together, because they loved the movies, and cools a lot for all of us. Just the son of thinking about all the wonderful moments we had with him.”
The “mom” fat then placed his hand on his heart while taking the crowd during the time of silence.
Hi, he added: “I wish you the best on the next trip.”
