How does it cause?

According to Medicine Johns Hopkins, ALS, a fatal and progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

Known as Lou Hrig’s disease in honor of the famous baseball player who died from the disease, since it indriminously affects all genres and races, he thought it is a bit more common in men than in women.

The typical age of diagnosis is between 40 and 70, but can occur before.

There are two main types or as: sporadic and family.

So sporadic is the most common form of the disease, which represents 90% of all cases. Sporadic is produced at random without genetic cause or family history.

On the contrary, around 5-10% or cases are familiar, which means that two or more people in a family have AS. These cases are caused by several inherited factors. The most common is in a gene called SOD1.

The specific risk factors have not been conclusively identified, but the research is exploring the role of genetics and environmental factors in the development of the ELA. The investigation has suggested that smoking tobacco can increase the risk of a person for AS.

Life expectancy

People fighting the disease usually live between three and five years after diagnosis. However, many patients with so much exceed these numbers.

The AS association reports that approximately 10% of people diagnosed with AS live at least 10 more years, while around 5% live at least 20 years or more. An outstanding example is the physicist Stephen Hawking, who lived as for more than 50 years after his diagnosis.
