Kash Patel is in the ATF, what does it mean for cannabis?
Recent changes in the alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosive (ATF) office and Kash Patel’s departure as head of the ATF under the current administration could have significant implications for the cannabis industry. These developments come in the midst of broader changes in federal drug policy and application priorities. What does the change in the ATF for cannabis mean?
The role of ATF in the regulation of substances such as alcohol and tobacco indirectly crosses cannabis regulation, particularly as cannabis legalization expands in all states. According to Trump’s administration, there has been a boost to rationalize federal agencies and reduce bureaucracy, which could lead to changes in the way in which the ATF interacts with the application related to cannabis. If the ATF focuses more on traditional priorities, such as firearms and alcohol participation in alcohol in cannabis application, it can decrease, which potentially reduces federal supervision in cannabis companies. However, this change could also leave regulatory gaps that states must address independently.
The withdrawal of Kash Patel from the agency leadership eliminates a figure that had proposed a significant restructuring within the application of the federal law.
The anticipated relescalado of the DEA marijuana from Annex I to Annex III soaks me a fundamental development for Canbiss options. This change would facilitate medical research restrictions, allow tax deductions for cannabis companies and improve bank access. Combined with Trump’s general support for cannabis reprogramming and the possible adoncense of the safe banking law, these reforms could promote growth in the sector.
What is interesting is that the president of the Mike Johnson representatives (R-La) and other struggles against cannabis, the public is moving towards him. And all studies show that the public, mainly the younger generations, are slowly moving away from alcohol. Beer sales have continued to fall since the legalization of marijuana. Only time will say if the federals fall into tune with the public.
