Mets fend off pesky A’s thanks to Pete Alonso’s latest big night

Canning walked Urshela and Rooker in the fifth, but escaped by putting José Siri in the central garden.

The Mets build a cushion in the sixth in the double of two Starling Mars races that extended the advantage to 6-1.

Alonso’s sacrifice fly brought the first race at the entrance after the Mets had loaded the bases on two walks and an error. Marte scored the frame with a shot on the head of the central gardener of Bleday.

Reed Garrett loaded the bases by allowing Max Muncy and the consecutive walks to Lawrence Butler and Rooker before removing Sodeterstrom to end the entrance.

The RBI was the third of Alonso’s game and gave him 18 for the season. Díaz then survived a potential disaster in the ninth.
