Mayor Adams is $3M in the hole for criminal defense as donations dry up

Mayor Eric Adams is buried under a growing mountain of unpaid legal invoices that accumulated a duration of a historical bribery case, since the donors of their defense fund completely disappear.

Hizzer has an unpaid tab of more than $ 3 million for his fight against federal corruption positions, with his high profile lawyer Alex Spiro that invoices almost $ 2.3 million, according to his last public presentation.

But Spiro’s law firm has not yet charged Adams for the representation this year, which could hundreds of thousands of thousands or dollars to their growing debt. Quinn Emanuel charged the mayor around $ 775,000 in the last three months of 2024.

At the same time, the background could not collect a single donation this year.

A federal judge signed the dismissal of the case presented by the Southern District of New York in early April after a controversial order of the Trump Doj, which caused a prosecutor’s exodus, including the interim chief of the Bajo Manhatan office.

The delay in dismissal and the historical numbers of low voting for a titular mayor led Adams to turn from the Democratic primaries and to establish their gaze in the general elections of November and Independiente.

While the political possibilities of a third -party victory are scarce, it gives the mayor months of potential relevance in the public eye to raise money.

Adams also owes his former main lawyer, Brendan McGuare, more than $ 2 million and his defense fund manager, Vito Pita, almost $ 100,000, according to the quarterly presentation with the conflict or interest surveyed late.

The spokesman for the Adams campaign, Todd Shapiro, minimized the abysmal presentation, saying: “The mayor is exploring all the appropriate means to address the debt without compromising his duties with the city.

“With the recent dismissal of charges, it now focuses on restoring public confidence and ensuring that all obligations, including legal expenses, have a transparent and ethical way,” he added.

The Adams campaign has faced a similar obstacle in recent months with donations that dry, since followers apparently saw few possibilities that it could be re -elected, but it still has more than $ 3 million in its war chest.
