It is game 18. A Wednesday night against the real ones. And not George Brett’s real ones that the Yankees hated on the way back.
However, game 18 will have resonance beyond the monotony of the long season. Maybe more than that. It is a milestone for the Yankees of 2025 to finally add an incoming instead of losing one.
Clarke Schmidt fell into spring training with tendonitis of the rotator sleeve, leaving the Yankees without him, Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil. Cole, after needing Tommy John surgery, does not return this season. It is unlikely that Gil, with a tense bar, returns before June.
Then Schmidt’s return on Wednesday is consistent. The Yankees have been survived and advanced with their rotation. They were first in east when the Begen Besday game, mainly despite their headlines. They have needed their bats to cover the rotation, while Aaron Boone has had to juggled so as not to overload his early pen in a short -beginning fog.
