Today is Friday, April 11, on 101 of 2025. 264 days remain in the year.

Today in history:

On April 11, 1945, World War II, the US Army troops released the Nazi concentration camp of Buchenwald near Weimar, Germany.

Also on this date:

In 1814, Napoleon Bonaparte abdicated as Emperor of the French and was banished to the island of Elba. (Napoleon then escaped from Elba and returned to power in March 1815, until his fall in the battle of Waterloo in June 1815).

In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln spoke with a crowd outside the White House, saying: “We find this event, not sadly, but of joy.” (It was the last public direction that Lincoln would deliver; it would be four days later after John Wilkes Booth would shoot him).

In 1951, President Harry S. Truman relieved General Douglas MacArthur or his command after multiple public statements of MacArthur that contradicted the official policies of the United States.

In 1961, former SS Officer Adolf Eichmann went to the trial in Israel, accused of crimes against humanity for his role in the Nazi Holocaust. (Eichmann was later convicted and executed).

In 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson promulgated the Civil Rights Law of 1968, which included the Civil Rights Law of India and the fair housing law, a week after the murder of Martin Luther King Jr.

In 1970, Apollo 13, with astronauts James A. Lovell, Fred W. Haise and Jack Swigert, took off the unfortunate mission to the moon. (The mission was aborted after an explosion of the oxygen tank two days after takeoff, and the crew spoke safely into the Pacific Ocean on April 17).

In 1980, the Employment Opportunities Commission published guidelines that said that sexual harassment in the workplace was equivalent to illegal sexual discrimination in violation of the title VII of the Civil Rights Law of 1964.

In 2012, George Zimmerman, Florida’s Watch Neighborhood Watch Volunteer who fatally fired through Trayvon Martin, was arrested and accused of second degree murder. (It was acquired at the trial).
