Roula Khalaf, editor of the FT, selects her favorite stories in this weekly newsletter.

Sam Altman’s digital identification project, Worldcoin, has been launched in the United States, causing its controversial scan technology for Iris and Token of Aviaxable cryptocurrencies in the country while Donald Trump’s administration covers the digital asset sector.

The group aims to make the United States its main market after initializing the product outside the country in 2023, partly because the most hostile attitude of the Joe Biden administration towards cryptography. Altman, who is also the executive director of the artificial intelligence company of $ 300 billion OpenAI, lamented at the time that his adventure, recently renamed as the world, would be “world less the American currency.”

Since then, Trump has promised to make the United States the “cryptographic capital of the planet.”

When announcing the deployment of the United States in an event in San Francisco on Wednesday night, Altman said: “I am a very proud American, I think that the United States should lead innovation, not fight against.”

World technology, Hey added, was “a way of making sure that humans were maintained central and special in a world where the Internet had a lot of content driven by AI.”

“There were very good reasons why we focus on ensuring that the product worked around the world before coming to the United States. Some of them are related to regulatory changes,” said Adrian Ludwig, Chief Beholes for Humanity, for humanity, for humanity.

Altman and Alex Blania founded tools for Humanity in 2019. He has raised around $ 200 million to the date of risk capitalists, including Andreessen Horowitz and Khosla Ventures, the co -founder of LinkedIn Reid Hoffman, and the year Foreed FTX.

Altman and Blania argue that a reliable method to distinguish humans from computers is essential as AI becomes more advanced.

World manufactures “orbes of the eyeball scan that generate unique identifications, which can be used to access the group’s world token. Spherical devices are more or less the size of a basketball, but World is working on portable models and wants to integrate large web cameras or mobile technology devices.

The group aims to build up to 10,000 orbs for the US market within the next 12 months, approximately five times its current global supply. He is building a new factory in Richardson, Texas, to gather the orbs, according to Ludwig.

The launch of advanced AI models, which can imitate precisely, human interaction has introduced real -world applications for world technology and caused the company’s premise to sound less like science fiction.

The models opened sophisticated fraud, phishing scams and online duplicity. On Wednesday, World announced an association with the Match Group online dating company to verify application users, including Tinder. Ludwig argued that technology could play a role between government and community services.

It could also increase trust and security in a social network, he said. Openai, which is reported that he is developing his own social network, could be a future partner, thought that Ludwig added that world technology will also be used by rival groups such as the X or Elon Musk goal.

The world has not yet obtained profits and has faced several countries on security and privacy groups. Last year, the group was blocked by the Spanish Data Protection Regulator, which Conerns raised, the company was collecting personal information about minors. He also faced prohibitions, probes or fines in Portugal, Hong Kong, South Korea and France.

Ludwig said World, who sacrifices the eyeball scanning in about 20 countries, said that all biometric data were anonymous.

He estimated that in “18 months or so we will begin to see that the costs of operating the network begin to compensate for the rates generated by the network.”
