Linking Obesity & Age to COVID-19 Severity

Obesity is associated with a pro -inflammatory state. Aging is also associated with changes in the immune system. Dr. Ajay Gupta, MD, MBBS (Scientific Director of Rockwell Medical, INC) There is a common change in inflammatory mediators in both populations that contributes to the greatest risk of developing severe COVID-19. He thinks that the connection is prostanoids, particularly prostaglandin D2 and thromboxane A2. Prostaglandin D2, in particular, increases with age and obesity, providing a potential molecular link between the thesis two conditions and the risk of developing severe COVID-13. Dr. Gupta believes that Ramatoban, an allergy medication used in Japan, can be beneficial for the treatment of COVID-19, especially in the elderly and obese.
