US stops endorsing covid-19 shots for kids – are other vaccines next?

Secretary of Health and Human Services of the United States Robert F Kennedy JR

One of the main vaccine experts in the US disease control and prevention centers.

The announcement triggered several days of Conund that will have access to COVID-19 vaccines in the US. In the future. In practice, there is a drastic change to access, although there will probably be new obstacles to parents who expect to vaccinate their children. Even so, Kennedy’s announcement indicates an eludable avoid public health standards.

“My career in public health and vaccination began with a deep desire to help the most vulnerable members of our population, and that is not something that I can continue doing on this role,” said Panagiotakopoulos in an email to colleagues.

Panagiotakopos supported the Immunization Practices Advisory Committee (ACIP), which has been informed of CDCs on vaccine recommendations since 1964. But last week, the public health official of Best Kennedy-El País rank exceeded this decades. “I could not be happy to announce that, as of today, the Covid vaccine for healthy children and a healthy pregnant woman has been withdrawn from the immunization schedule recommended by the CDC,” he said in a video published on social networks.

Despite their directive, the CDCs have made, so far, only minor changes in their guide on COVID-19 vaccines. Instead of recommending them for children, now recommends vaccination “based on shared clinical decision making.” In other words, parents must talk to a doctor before deciding. It is not clear how this will affect access to these vaccines in each scenario, but it could make children more widespread in pharmacies.

The CDC guide on pregnancy vaccination is also ambiguous. While its website still recommends a pregnancy of COVID-19 shooting duration, a note at the top says: “This page will be updated to align with the updated immunization program.”

Kennedy’s announcement also contradicts the positions of the main public health organizations. Both the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (HOME) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (APP) have come to his option.

“CDC and HHS encourage people to speak with their medical care provider about any personal medical decision,” said an HHS spokesman New scientist. “Under the leadership of Secretary Kennedy, HHS is restoring the medical-patient relationship.”

However, Linda Eckert at the University of Washington in Seattle says that conflicting messages are confused for people. “Open disassembly opportunities. Minta trust in vaccination in general,” she says. “I can’t imagine that I immunization rates in general.”

Research has repeatedly shown Covid-19 vaccination in adolescence and pregnancy is safe and effective. In fact, Martin Makary, head of the United States Food and Medicines Administration (FDA), lists pregnancy as a severe risk factor for COVID-19 a week before Kennedy’s announcement, even more convoling public health messages from the government.

Kennedy’s announcement is in line with the policies that have taken from other countries. For example, Australia and the United Kingdom did not forward COVID-19 vaccines for children unless they run the risk of serious illness. They also donated Covid-19 Gatry pregnancy IFYONE is already vaccinated.

Astma Khalil, a member of the Committee of Vaccination and Immunization of the United Kingdom, says that the United Kingdom’s decision was based on the reduced risk of the omicrona variant, the profitability of vaccination and high immunity of the population. However, thesis factors may vary in all countries. The population of the United Kingdom also tends to have better access to medical care than the United States, says Eckert. “These decisions should carefully consider the risks and benefits in relation to the national population,” says Khalil. The HHS did not respond New scientistThe questions about whether a similar analysis guided Kennedy’s decision -making.

However, what is more worrying is the precedent of Kennedy’s ads sets. The Acip-An Independent Group of Public Health Experts, was expected to vote on the changes proposed to the recommendations of the COVID-19 vaccine at the end of this month. But Kennedy’s decision has overlooked this process.

“This decision -making style by individuals instead of going through experts who are carefully examined by conflicts of interest, who carefully look at the data: this has never happened in our country,” says Eckert. “We are in unknown territory.” He worries that the movement can pave the way for Kennedy to take over other vaccine recommendations. “I know there are many vaccines that has been actively again in her career,” she says. Kennedy has previously blamed vaccines for autism and falsely said that the polyomyelitis vaccine caused more deaths than he avoided.

“What speaks like the fact that [Kennedy] He does not see value in these vaccines and will do everything possible to try to devalue them in the public’s minds and make them more difficult to challenge, “says Amesh Adalja of Johns Hopkins University.
