Thunderbolts* Review: Simple Yet Powerful Step for MCU’s Future

Thunderbolts* is a solid and powerful entry to the MCU’s Phase Five. This was something Marvel needed more than we, as fans, did. It is one of the best projects that Marvel Studios has released since the Avengers: Endgame, and this coming from someone who loves She-Hulk: Attorney at Law!  The Studio has been losing its die-hard fan base for a few years now, especially from projects like Captain America: Brave New World and Secret Invasion. Thunderbolts* sits at the same level as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in terms of storytelling and execution.

Plot

For the most part, Thunderbolts* is a standalone movie that follows Yelena Belova, Taskmaster, Ghost, and U.S. Agent, taking each other out and cleaning Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s mess until they meet Bob! The group of misfits team up against Val and escape the trap set by her. Red Guardian and Bucky Barnes later join the team and are now struggling to fight Sentry, aka Bob. Lewis Pullman’s character begins to get out of control and take over the world as soon as he realizes his power.

Thunderbolts* Movie Review

The movie starts has a very simple yet interesting start, something that fans expected the whole movie to be. The real fun begins when we are introduced to Bob (played by Lewis Pullman). He looks like a regular civilian who somehow managed to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, and that’s what makes him interesting. His struggle with mental health issues has been highlighted and handled with sensitivity, we connect with him on a deeper level. Sentry’s role and story are as captivating as Taskmaster’s role in the movie, and by that, I mean you will end up thinking about these two characters once you’re done watching the film.

Talking about Sentry/The Void, his superpowers are next to any other superhero. He is strong, scary, and a powerhouse on screen. One thing about Pullman’s Sentry that I don’t like is his suit. It looks like a cheap copy of Henry Cavill’s Superman, just painted in different colours. It doesn’t suit him well, especially with that shade of blonde haircolor. That takes out the appeal of the character who is so frightening.

Bob and Yelena’s chemistry is one of the things that steals the spotlight. It feels like they understand each other and anyone who is struggling with their mental health. Florence Pugh is exceptional in Thunderbolts*. She continues to prove that she is THE Florence Pugh! Her scenes with David Harbour are nothing but a sweet treat for the audience. They tackle loneliness and inner struggles beautifully. Pugh and Harbour deliver their best performances along with Sebastian Stan. It’s a pleasure to see Wyatt Russell, Hannah John-Kamen, and Julia Louis -Dreyfus get the limelight they deserve in the MCU. Russell’s scenes are comedic but not so much that they feel out of place. Geraldine Vishwanath made her MCU debut, but her potential was wasted. She is a young, rising actress who deserves to have a major MCU role, as it could have given her career a major push.

Thunderbolts* feels like an actual movie and not just some characters thrown together for 2 hours of screen time. The film is strong and character-driven, with lots of top-tier action scenes that is fun. It has qualities which were missing from the recent projects.

Post-Credits Scene

Without spoiling much, I will tell you that this is not one of those scenes where you feel upset for sitting till the end just for some pizza guy to yell “It’s over!,” no offense to Bruce Campbell! This post-credits scene actually teases something big, and fun fact – it was shot by the Russo Brothers on the set of Avengers: Doomsday. So, now you know that it’s not just fun but important to the main storyline.

The post-credits scene is the longest in the MCU. It is 2 minutes and 54 seconds long.

Audience’s Reaction

Thunderbolts* currently sits at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes’ Audience Score. The movie is receiving appreciation on social media platforms from people all over the world. Fans are praising Lewis Pullman and Florence Pugh more than other cast members.

When and Where to Watch Thunderbolts*?

Thunderbolts* is currently in theaters worldwide. For streaming, we expect it to be released on Disney+ in approximately 60 days, just like most Marvel movies – around July 2, 2025.
