Sea moss, also known as Chondrus crispus, is the latest marine ingredient making waves in the skin care world.

Also known as Irish moss, its an algae which originates and can be found in the Atlantic coasts of Europe and North America.

The botanical is rich in antioxidants and essential nutrients like vitamins A, B, C, D, E, and K, as well as minerals such as iodine, potassium, calcium, and magnesium.

While it has long been consumed for its health benefits, it is now being recognised for its skin care potential.

From foaming cleansers to liquid supplements and hydrating mists, sea moss is a versatile ingredient, suitable for a range of skin care applications.

As consumers continue to look for natural, multi-functional ingredients that support both skin health and overall wellness, it’s clear that sea moss is here to stay.

Laura Kay, beauty expert and owner of permanent make-up studio Laura Kay London, explains the growing interest: “Sea moss is having its moment, driven by celebrity endorsements and the broader interest in plant-based beauty”.

“One of its standout features is its ability to hydrate and soothe the skin, sea moss is known for its hydrating properties and can also help to trigger collagen production, making it a popular choice for those looking to maintain youthful, healthy skin,” says Kay.

She adds that the ingredient has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory benefits, making it ideal for multiple skin types, including dry, oily, and combination skin.
